"Connected" - Stereo MC's
from the album Connected (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's song of the day comes from the British electronica band the Stereo MC's, who scored a top-40 pop hit in America with "Elevate My Mind" in the summer of 1991. Two years later, the group re-emerged with their next album Connected. The first single and title track from the album, written by their leader Nick Hallam and Rob Birch, takes a sample of the disco song "Let Me (Let Me Be Your Lover" from Jimmy "Bo" Horne, which was written by Harry Casey and Richard Finch from  KC & The Sunshine Band...

"Connected" became the Stereo MC's biggest hit in America, reaching the top 20 in June of 1993. The song also climbed to #5 on Billboard's Modern Rock radio format chart. Internationally, the single made the top ten in Austria (#5), Switzerland (#6), and Sweden (#8), while hitting the top-40 in Finland (#14), the UK (#18), Belgium (#19), New Zealand (#24), France (#27), and Canada (#32).

The band's next single from Connected, "Step It Up", ended up their biggest hit in their British homeland, climbing to #12, while in America the song peaked at #58 pop, #18 Modern Rock, and #25 Dance. That was followed by two singles that made it to #19 on the British chart, "Ground Level" and "Creation".

Concentrating on remixing work, it took eight full years before they returned with another album, Deep Down and Dirty, in 2001. While the title track "Deep Down and Dirty" got to #17 on the British chart, it was ignored in the States. Two more singles came from the album, with "Running" their last charting single in the UK so far at #81. They've released a few records since - the most recent being Emperor's Nightingale in 2011.
