Songoftheday 10/15/18 - You could say I'd lost my belief in our politicians, they all seemed like game show hosts to me...

"If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" - Sting
from the album Ten Summoner's Tales (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's song of the day comes from ex-Police-man Sting, who had started the 1990s with his top-5 pop hit "All This Time" from the spring of 1991. The following year, he recorded a song for the soundtrack to the cop buddy movie Lethal Weapon 3, "It's Probably Me" with Eric Clapton, which was a top-40 hit in the UK (#30), topped the singles chart in Italy, and peaked at #20 on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock radio chart in the U.S. In March of 1993, he returned with his fourth solo album after leaving The Police, Ten Summoner's Tales. The lead single from the set would be the uptempo pondering of "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You". Written by the artist, who co-produced the track with Hugh Padgham, the song's chorus seems like a love song but hides just a bit of bitterness in the verses...

"If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" returned Sting to the pop top-20 in America in May of 1993. The song reached the top five on both the Modern (#4) and Mainstream (#5) Rock radio charts in Billboard in the U.S., while climbing to #8 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") format list. Internationally, the single topped the Canadian pop chart for three weeks, and a single one in Italy, while making the top ten in Norway (#7), Spain (#9), and Belgium (#10). It also hit the top-40 in his native UK (#14) as well as in Switzerland (#16), Ireland (#28), the Netherlands (#30), Germany (#31), Sweden (#34), New Zealand (#36), and France (#39). At the Grammy Awards in 1994, Ten Summoner's Tales was nominated for Album Of The Year, which went to the Bodyguard soundtrack, while "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" won for Male Pop Vocal Performace, also getting nominated for Record Of The Year (losing to Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You") and Song Of The Year (won by Alan Mencken and Tim Rice for "A Whole New World").
