Songoftheday 10/7/18 - Let me lick you up and down til' you say stop, let me play with your body baby make you real hot...

"Freak Me" - Silk
from the album Lose Control (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 22

Today's song of the day comes from the R&B vocal group Silk, who came together in the late 1980s in Atlanta with lead singer Gary Jenkins along with Timothy Cameron, Jimmy Gates Jr, Gary Glenn, and Jonathen Rasboro. New jack swing artist Keith Sweat brought them to his Keia imprint on Elektra Records, where they recorded their debut album Lose Control, which came out in the fall of 1992. Their first single, "Happy Days", which Sweat guested on, became a moderate R&B hit (#13), and nicked the pop Hot 100 in Billboard magazine at #86. But it was their second release that would make them pop stars - with the luscious booty-call soul of "Freak Me". Written by Sweat with Roy Murray, the song was provocative but had such a memorable hook on the chorus that eventually pop radio couldn't deny the song that spent two months at #1 on the R&B list...

"Freak Me" became Silk's biggest pop success, spending two weeks at #1 on Billboard's pop chart in America. The song spent eight weeks on top of their R&B chart as well, their sole chart-topper on both lists. Internationally, the record reached the top ten Down Under in Australia (#3) and New Zealand (#9), while is just missed the top-40 in the Netherlands (#42), Canada (#43), and the UK (#46).
