Songoftheday 10/18/18 - I'm not denying there's a time for crying, just tell me why you look so sad tonight...

"Nothin' My Love Can't Fix" - Joey Lawrence
from the album Joey Lawrence (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #19 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's song of the day comes from Joey Lawrence, a Philadelphia native who started out as a child actor, appearing on commercials and TV shows before getting his break on the show Gimme A Break with Nell Carter in the mid-1980s. His second big TV role, as the older brother on the teen comedy Blossom, came in 1991, and with his popularity on the show, landed himself a recording contract. Joey released his self-titled debut album in 1993, with the song "Nothin' My Love Can't Fix" as the lead single. A squeaky-clean new jack swing track written by Lawrence with Alexandra Forbes and Eric Beall, the record would grant him instant success, becoming his biggest music hit. He even included his catchword as the hook in the chorus...

Whoa indeed.

"Nothin' My Love Can Fix" became Joey's first and only top-40 pop hit in May of 1993. Internationally the single went to #13 in the UK and #22 in Ireland, and #50 in Canada. His next release, "I Can't Help Myself", stiffed in America but scored Lawrence a second top-40 hit in the UK at #27. That was followed by the midtempo ballad "Stay Forever", which was a minor pop hit in the U.S. at #52 and just missed the top-40 in Britain at #41.

Joey spent the mid-90s starring in another television sitcom, Brotherly Love, which also featured his brothers Matt and Andrew, that lasted for two seasons. In 1998, he returned with a second album, Soulmates. While neither the record or any of the tracks charted in America, the lead single "Never Gonna Change My Mind" reached #49 in the UK. Since then he's appeared regularly on TV in shows like Touched By An Angel and CSI:NY, and starring in Run Of The House in 2005 and four seasons of Melissa and Joey (with Melissa Joan Hart) in 2010. In 2006, he appeared on Dancing With The Stars, coming out in third place (his brother Matthew is dating dancer Cheryl Burke).
