It's time to kick off the first of this week's 'music sweeps', checking out the songs making their debut on the various singles charts in Billboard magazine . As usual, I'll start out on the pop side of things, then later on move on to the latest in rock, R&B, country, and dance music... On the "big" chart, Billboard 's Hot 100 , which combines tallies from radio airplay from all formats, sales (like iTunes and Amazon MP3), and internet streaming (like Spotify and YouTube), Drake spends a fifth week on top with " One Dance "... Drake also appears as a featured rapper/singer on the top debut of the week, as DJ Khaled rockets in at #18 with "For Free". It's Khaled's eighth top-40 Hot 100 hit, and his second-highest charting single after " I'm On One " (also with Drake), which went to #10 in 2011. Grade: C- (click below to see the rest of the post)

With the sad death of Prince last week, a mad dash to reconnect to anything Prince-related followed, especially with the Purple One not available on any "streaming" services save Tidal. People went to buy songs and albums by the truckload, and as a result six of his most iconic singles make it back on to the pop Hot 100 (which allowed older records that wou...

As usual, I'll start out on the pop side of things, then later on move on to the latest in rock, R&B, country, and dance music. (I had to take a break due to timing the last couple weeks and was considering dropping this altogether, but decided to feature the best of the songs instead of everything, to whittle the quality stuff out I think you should at least give a shot to. I've included my own ratings, but of course I'm no Dave Marsh...) However, the video for this won't be out until the end of the month, and there's not even an official audio or lyric clip for it, so Meghan, you may have jilted yourself out of another top ten hit... On the "big" chart, Billboard 's Hot 100 , which combines tallies of internet streaming (like Spotify or YouTube), sales (like Amazon MP3 and iTunes), and radio airplay from all formats, there's a new song at the top. There was speculation on what would become of Zayn Malik leaving the enormously successful "boy-band" One Direction, but for right now, talk is put to rest as his first solo single "Pillowtalk" does what no 1D single has done yet - topped the American pop chart (they made it to #2 with " Best Song Ever ")... Rihanna rockets into the top 10 in her first week with "Work". Sadly, as a "Tidal" streaming exclusive there's no video/audio clip around (boo!). This faux exclusivity kills careers, and she isn't by any means invincible (check the results of her " American Oxygen " and to a lesser extent " Bitch Better Have My Money ")... On the "big" chart, Billboard 's Hot 100 , Justin Bieber tops the chart for a second week with "Sorry"... After the death of David Bowie, the current single from his #1 album Blackstar , "Lazarus" lands his legacy the first top-40 pop hit in America since 1987's " Never Let Me Down ". Also two other of his tracks, " Space Oddity " and " Under Pressure ", re-enter the charts at #42 and #45 respectively. As for "Lazarus", it's an amazing piece of work; obviously this would never have had a shot at the top-40 save for the circumstances, but sadly it's good that it did happen, and this song should end up in the same rega...
