Pop Sweep: June 25, 2016...

It's time to kick off the first of this week's 'music sweeps', checking out the songs making their debut on the various singles charts in Billboard magazine. As usual, I'll start out on the pop side of things, then later on move on to the latest in rock, R&B, country, and dance music...

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies from radio airplay from all formats, sales (like iTunes and Amazon MP3), and internet streaming (like Spotify and YouTube), Drake spends a fifth week on top with "One Dance"...

Drake also appears as a featured rapper/singer on the top debut of the week, as DJ Khaled rockets in at #18 with "For Free". It's Khaled's eighth top-40 Hot 100 hit, and his second-highest charting single after "I'm On One" (also with Drake), which went to #10 in 2011. Grade: C-

Shawn Mendes had one of the biggest hits of 2016 so far with "Stitches", which peaked at #4. He's back at #34 with his "Treat You Better", which presumably previews his upcoming second album. Grade: C

Producer Mike Will-Made-It slips in at #75 with "Nothing Is Promised" featuring Rihanna. Mike had a big hit under his own name in 2013 with "23" which had Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, and Juicy J, which peaked at #11. Grade: D

And now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Justin Timberlake is at #1 for a second week with "Can't Stop The Feeling!", while the aforementioned Shawn Mendes track comes in at #28...

Rihanna's top-10 Hot 100 hit "Needed Me" finally reaches this format as it enters at #37. The lead single from her Anti album, "Work", holds at #39. Grade: D+

Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, Timberlake is on top for a second week, while no songs debut on the list...

Lastly on the Adult Contemporary, or "easy listening" radio chart, Justin Bieber takes a seventh week at #1 with "Love Yourself"...

Former One Directioner Zayn takes his former #1 Hot 100 hit "Pillowtalk" to this list at #26. Grade: C+

Elton John claims this week's "Pop Pick of the Week" with his 72nd hit on the chart (a record), "A Good Heart". Grade: C+

I'll be back with the latest on rock radio...
