" Diary " - Alicia Keys featuring Tony! Toni! Tone'! from the album The Diary Of Alicia Keys (2003) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 25   Today's song comes from singer/songwriter/producer Alicia Keys , whose sophomore album Diary Of Alicia Keys had already spun off a pair of quality top ten hits on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 with " You Don't Know My Name " and " If I Ain't Got You ".  The third single from the record was the de facto title track "Diary". Produced by Alicia, who wrote the song with her then-partner Kerry "Krucial" Brothers Jr., the lyrics have Keys comparing herself to the titular journal, where her partner can confide in his deepest secrets. Backing her up on the choruses was the "reunion" of R&B group Tony! Toni! Tone'! , who were last seen in the series on their double-sided top-40 hit "Let's Get Down" and "Thinking Of You...

" One Voice " - Billy Gilman from the album One Voice (2000) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #38 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 2   Today's song comes from country music singer Billy Gilman , who was born and grew up in the southern state of Rhode Island (snark), where he already had been singing on stage as a child at local fairs. Ray Benson, leader of the traditional country act Asleep At The Wheel, took him under his wing and helped Billy record an audition tape which eventually got him signed to Epic Records. Gilman released his debut single "One Voice" in the spring of 2000, days after he turned twelve years old. The song, written and produced by Don Cook and David Malloy, was a morality lesson that starts in poor man generalities before taking a dark turn about a boy with a gun that is STILL sadly relevant in this exact point in time. Like LeAnn Rimes, Gilman's voice carries this, though he's a little more choirboy pristine that Rimes' sassines...

" Cleopatra's Theme " - Cleopatra from the album Comin' Atcha! (1998) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #26 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 8   Today's song of the day comes from the British "girl group" Cleopatra, who were sisters Cleo (from whom they got their name), Yonah, and Zainah Higgins. Growing up in Manchester, the siblings were signed to Warner Brothers Records in England, where they released their debut single "Cleopatra's Theme".  Written by the group along with Kenny Parker and Tim Scraffton, it was definitely more of a branding than a song, announcing themselves even more blatantly than the boy and girl bands of the day, and sounding like a "theme" to a sitcom rather than a radio record. And that's exactly what it was, as a sitcom was produced for the group that actually ended up running for two seasons that also had their mother and other non-singing sister in it. Somehow, the "theme" got picked up in t...

" Cell Therapy " - Goodie Mob from the album Soul Food (1995) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #39 (three weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 3 Today's song of the day comes from the rap group Goodie Mob, who came together in Atlanta in the early 1990s. Signed to Babyface's vanity label LaFace, Big Gipp, Khujo, T-Mo, and Cee-Lo (Green) released their first single "Cell Therapy" in the late summer of 1995. Written by Gipp and Khujo along with producers Organized Noize, the song is a bleak look at life in poor cities like Atlanta, where there are always two sets of rules and the "gated communities" meant to keep drugs away only serve to keep its residents in, with a heavy helping of paranoia about a "new world order"... "Cell Therapy" became Goodie Mob's first and biggest success, their sole top-40 pop hit in November of 1995. The song also climbed to #17 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, while topping their Rap Singles...
