Eurovision 2022 Spotlight: The Grand Final...

Image
Well, we've come to the final moment in this year's Eurovision Song Contest season. The two semi-finals are over, with the requisite bloodbath that whittled 20 finalists out of 35 contenders. You can check out my recaps of the songs in those two semis in part one and part two of my series. The twenty that made it out, for better (Australia) or for worse (Serbia) will be joined in the final by the "Big Five": Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, and this year's hosts, Italy. Since they provide a much higher chunk of funding towards the contest, they don't have to bother with any qualification worries. Now, for a long while this has created a bit of resentment among the other countries, and I can't deny it seems like it has had an effect on the results, with a placing in the bottom common. Last year was an anomaly, with the UK, Spain, Germany, and hosts the Netherlands (which also get an automatic pass to the final) found themselves in the last...

Eurovision 2022 Spotlight: Semi Final Two...

Image
Well, the first semi-final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest proved to be the circus it was set up to be, with surprises galore out of a field of mostly sub-par entries. It seems all the ballads made it through, probably with the televote going to Ukraine (for obvious reasons) and Norway for their novelty ditty. The second final is tonight (this afternoon in the States) and it's probably going to be a bloodbath, with far more worthy entries competing for just ten spots in the final. That seems to be always the case with one of the semis, but it's so blatant this year it's scary. There's definitely going to be someone unfairly cast out. But that's the name of the game, in the words of previous winners ABBA. So here's a recap of the 18 songs vying for the finals tonight...   1. Finland - "Jezebel" by The Rasmus    After their success last year, coming in 6th with the god-awful metal pastiche of "Dark Side" from Blind Channel whic...

Eurovision 2022 Spotlight: Semi Final One

Image
I still can't believe it's May already (probably due to the coldish weather we've been having), but it's finally time for Eurovision week! This year it's in Turin, Italy, after the win last year for the rock band Maneskin, who have gone on to have quite a bit of success worldwide, including a massive hit in America, though NOT with their winning song "Zitto e Buoni" but with a remake of a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song from the 1960s "Beggin"" they did when they were contestants on Italy's version of The X Factor . This year 40 countries are competing, with Armenia and Montenegro returning and Russia getting the boot obviously for their invasion of Ukraine. Tonight is the first of two semi-finals where either 17 or 18 countries vie for 10 spots in the final, where they'll be joined by the "big five" of Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and the UK, who finance the contest enough so they get a free pass. This year d...
