Songoftheday 6/15/16 - I'm in love with you girl 'cause you're on my mind, you're the one I think about most every time...
"Girl You Know It's True" - Milli Vanilli
from the album Girl You Know It's True (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 15
Today's song of the day was the first single in America released by the R&B/pop act Milli Vanilli, which was put together by German producer Frank Farian, who had steered a bunch of records under various monikers on to the European charts, most notably with Boney M., which actually reached the top-40 in the U.S. with "Rivers Of Babylon". Farian, coming from a culture that regularly were able to produce anonymously-performed music, recorded the single "Girl You Know It's True" with a group of studio singers. However, with MTV ruling the success of any music during that time, Frank set to hire "faces" to represent the band, if not actually being the band. French dancer and model Fab Morvan and German-American army-brat Rob Pilatus were recruited by Farian, and depending on who you ask, either were threatened to pass off as "Milli Vanilli" after loaning them money or simply capitalizing on the act's success. But nonetheless "Girl You Know It's True", an actual enjoyable slice of dance-pop that wasn't flashy in its production other than the seamless mesh of fast-delivered rap and sung chorus, should've been a hit either way. The thing was, neither of the two spoke English well enough, but the kiddies didn't really pay much attention (yet)
"Girl You Know It's True" became Milli Vanilli's first top-ten pop hit in the U.S. in April of 1989. The single also climbed to #3 on Billboard's R&B chart, while the 12" remix version reached the same rank on their Dance Club Play list. Internationally, the song went to #1 in Germany, Austria, and Spain, #2 in Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, and France, and #3 in the UK, Canada, Ireland, and Finland.
