Pop Sweep: February 27, 2016...
Hey guys, it's time to kick off the first of this week's "music sweeps", checking out the songs making their way on to the American singles charts in Billboard magazine. As usual, I'll start out with the pop side of things, then later in the day move on to the latest in rock, R&B, country and dance. And away we gooooo!
On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of radio airplay from all formats, sales (like iTunes and Amazon MP3), and internet streaming (like Spotify and YouTube), Justin Bieber climbs back to #1 for a second non-consecutive week with "Love Yourself"...
Rapper Future's latest album EVOL lands at #2 on the Album Sales chart this week, and two tracks from the set come on to the Hot 100 pop chart on their own. First off at #52 is "Low Life" featuring the Weeknd, which probably has the best chance of grabbing radio airplay...

Veering from the rap trail, folk-rock trio the Lumineers light in at #78 with "Ophelia". It's the first single from their sophomore album Cleopatra. In 2012 they took "Ho Hey" to #3 on the Hot 100...
Recently the song "Die A Happy Man" from Thomas Rhett spent six weeks atop the Country Airplay chart. While his version is still in the top-40 at #30, a cover from rapper/autotuned singer Nelly pops on to the chart at #83. It follow Nelly's "The Fix", which peaked at #62 and falls to #97 in its 20th week this week...
DJ/remixing duo the Chainsmokers score their third Hot 100 hit at #85 with "Don't Let Me Down", featuring vocals from Daya, who has her own "Hide Away" single up at #24 on the chart. The pair are up at #9 with their "Roses".
Country singer Chase Rice is back at #94 with his brand new song "Whisper". His breakthrough single "Ready Set Roll" made it to #54 on the pop chart...
The final newbie on the big chart is another country single from a "Chase", this time Chase Bryant with "Little Bit Of You". It's his second hit, after "Take It On Back" climbed to #82 last year. This new entry has already spent 44 weeks on the country airplay chart before making it here...
And now on to the pop radio format charts...
On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, "Love Yourself" is on top for a third week...
Swedish indie-pop singer Zara Larsson and British artist MNEK get together at #37 with "Never Forget You", my "Pop Pick of the Week". The song went to #5 in the UK...
The third single from One Direction's Made In The AM album, "History", comes in at #38. The second, "Perfect", reached #10 on this chart and is at #34 this week...
Coldplay's current #1 alternative rock hit "Adventure Of A Lifetime" crosses over to this format at #39, no doubt helped by its exposure on the Super Bowl halftime show. The highest they've been on this chart has been with "Viva La Vida", which peaked at #12 in 2008...
Australian indie-dance duo Empire Of The Sun's 2008 single "Walking On A Dream" has gotten a second life thanks to those Honda commercials, with radio coming on board piece by piece, and now the pop radio chart welcomes the pair at #40...
Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, Rachel Platten holds at #1 for a second week with "Stand By You"...
Elle King leaps on to this chart at #30 with "America's Sweetheart". It's her pop radio follow-up single to her Grammy-nominated "Ex's & Oh's", which topped this chart and falls to #10 this week...
Australian singer/songwriter Vance Joy went to #1 on the Triple-A rock format with "The Fire and the Flood", which enters here at #38. It's his third hit on this chart - the first, "Riptide", reached #7...
Country singer Cam went to #2 on that genre airplay chart with "Burning House", and now pop radio has been noticing, as it flames in at #39. It also moves up to #37 on the Adult Contemporary chart..
And proving the diversity of the format, the dance music DJ/producer Robin Schulz shakes in at #40 with "Sugar" featuring Canadian singer Francesco Yates. The song was an international hit last year...
