Pop Sweep: April 16, 2016...
Hey guys, I'm back with the start of this week's "music sweeps", sampling some of the songs making their debut on the various singles charts in Billboard magazine. As usual, I'll start out on the pop side of things, then later on move on to the latest in rock, R&B, country, and dance music. (I had to take a break due to timing the last couple weeks and was considering dropping this altogether, but decided to feature the best of the songs instead of everything, to whittle the quality stuff out I think you should at least give a shot to. I've included my own ratings, but of course I'm no Dave Marsh...)
On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of radio airplay from all formats, sales (like iTunes and Amazon MP3), and internet streaming (like Spotify and YouTube), Rihanna's "Work" featuring Drake spends a seventh week at #1...
Nick Jonas leaps on to the chart up at #27 with "Close" featuring Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo. It's meant to be the lead single from his third solo album Last Year Was Complicated. C-

Country star Kenny Chesney's new single "Noise" clamors in at #72. It previews his upcoming July release Some Town Somewhere. C
And now on to the pop radio format charts...
On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Selena Gomez moves to #1 with "Hands To Myself"...
Jason Derulo returns at #34 with his latest, "If It Ain't Love". His last hit, "Get Ugly", went to #19 on this chart. C-
Australian DJ/producer/remixer Flume flows in at #35 with "Never Be Like You" featuring Kai. The record topped the chart in his homeland earlier this year. B+
Another former #1 hit in Australia that arrives is Grace's interpolation of the pop classic "You Don't Own Me" featuring rapper G-Eazy, which lands at #37. B-
Alt-dance act Major Lazer burns in at #38 with "Light It Up" featuring Nyla & Fuse ODG. B+
Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top 40, Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" reigns for a fourth week...
Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary, or "easy listening", radio chart, Adele remains on top for an amazing 20th week with "Hello"...
Trisha Yearwood takes her contribution to the TV musical special Passion, "Broken", to #28. C
Nashville-based pop singer/songwriter Ben Rector claims my "Pop Pick of the Week" with his glorious "Brand New", which pop sin at #30. A
