Robbed hit of the week 4/4/16 - Al B. Sure!'s "Off On Your Own (Girl)"...
"Off On Your Own (Girl)" - Al B. Sure!
from the album In Effect Mode (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #45
This week's "robbed hit" comes from R&B singer Al B. Sure!, who eschewed a football career to follow his musical heart to be mentored by uber-producer Quincy Jones. His debut single "Nite and Day" made it to the pop top-10 in the summer of 1988. The follow-up was a new jack swing jam written by the artist with his producer, Kyle West. "Off On Your Own (Girl)" has Al dancing through a puzzling break-up, alternately wondering why and begging back his love..
While "Off On Your Own (Girl)" became his second straight #1 R&B hit, the single stopped midway up the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in September of 1988. The extended version also climbed to #25 on their Dance Club Play list as well. Internationally, the record was a minor hit in the UK at #70.
