Songoftheday 4/29/16 - We both lie silently still in the dead of the night, although we both lie close together we feel miles apart inside...

"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" - Poison
from the album Open Up And Say... Ahhh! (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14

Today's song of the day comes from the "glam-metal" rock band Poison, whose sophomore album Open Up And Say... Ahhh! had landed them a second top ten pop hit with "Nothing But A Good Time" and almost another one with "Fallen Angel". Like many hard-rock act in the decade, for the third single the boys rolled out the "power-ballad" of the album, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". Written by the four bandmates and produced by Tom Werman, the countrified love song sung from the view of an imperfect (and probably raucous) man to his girl most likely was inspired by life on the road for this troublesome group, and it eventually became their biggest hit on the pop chart...

"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" became the band sole #1 pop hit in America in December of 1988. The song also climbed to #11 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart. Internationally, the record made the top ten in Ireland (#8) and New Zealand (#8), and the top-20 in the UK (#13, their biggest hit there), Switzerland (#12), Australia (#16), and the Netherlands (#18).

Poison performed the song on their appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1990...

....and here they are electric and live on tour in 1993...

Lastly, here's lead singer Bret Michaels and Miley Cyrus (who covered the track on her Can't Be Tamed album in 2010) making it a duet in Central Park in 2014...

Up tomorrow: A soulful boyband exile serves his own needs.
