Songoftheday 4/6/16 - I've had a pocketful of love in my time but the best of all is you...
"Another Lover" - Giant Steps
from the album The Book Of Pride (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #13 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10
Today's song of the day comes from the British sophisti-pop duo Giant Steps, who first recorded as the new wave act The Quick in the early 80s. After landing a top-20 hit in Australia with "Hip Shake Jerk" in 1980, they just missed the American dance top-40 at #41 a year later with "Young Men Drive Fast". Their follow-up track "Zulu", a bass-funk jam, did way better, going all the way to #1 on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart. Another American club hit, "Rhythm Of The Jungle" (#14), stalled out at #41 on the British singles chart, but went to #9 in the Netherlands and #13 in Australia.
In the mid-80s, The Quick transformed into a pop act, with singer Col Campsie and multi-instrumentalist George McFarlane renamed themselves Giant Steps. The first single from their debut (and only) album was used in the Patrick (McDreamy) Dempsey male-prostitute romp Loverboy. "Another Lover", written by the pair along with producer Gardner Cole, was a pleasant slice of sugary pop with a chorus hook that latches on like a tick...
"Another Lover" became Giant Steps' sole top-40 pop hit in America in November of 1988. The single also crossed over to #25 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, while the remixed version made it to #10 on Billboard's Dance Club Play list. A second single from the album, "Into You" went to #58 in America, but none of their songs made a dent in their home country. They wouldn't release anything as Giant Steps again.
