Songoftheday 10/14/18 - This is the morning of our love, it's just the dawning of our love...
"I Feel You" - Depeche Mode
from the album Songs Of Faith And Devotion (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #37 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1
Today's song of the day comes from the iconic new wave group Depeche Mode, who began the 1990s with their album Violator, which had spun off three big hits in America with "Personal Jesus", "Policy Of Truth", and the top ten single "Enjoy The Silence" (the biggest hit of their career in the US). After a massive world tour, the band regrouped to record their eighth studio record Songs Of Faith And Devotion, which came out in 1993. The first single released from the project demonstrated lead singer Dave Gahan's immersion into the hard rock environment, with grunge influencing the sound of the blues-rock stomper "I Feel You". Written by the band's lyrical leader Martin Gore, the simple yet emotional song brought them to a new audience, and their previous audience to a different place as well...
"I Feel You" became Depeche Mode's fifth top-40 pop hit in America in March of 1993. The song was the band's biggest hit on rock radio, spending five weeks at #1 on Billboard magazine's Modern Rock format chart. The remixes on the 12" vinyl and CD single helped the track climb to #3 on their Dance Club Play tally as well. Internationally, the single topped the chart in Spain and Finland, and reached the top ten in Sweden (#2), Germany (#4), Italy (#4), Switzerland (#4), France (#5), Ireland (#6), Austria (#7), and their native UK (#8). In Canada, it stopped at #31, while in Australia it peaked at #37. The Songs Of Faith And Devotion album became their first and so far only set to hit #1 in the U.S..
The second single from the album, the synthpop gem "Walking In My Shoes", also went to #1 on the Modern Rock radio chart, and went to #69 on the pop Hot 100 in America (and #14 in the UK). That was followed by the gospel-influenced "Condemnation", which made it to #23 on the Modern Rock list and #9 in Britain. Finally, the brooding "In My Room" got to #8 in the UK.
