Robbed hit of the week 10/8/18 - Bizarre Inc featuring Angie Brown's "I'm Gonna Get You"...

"I'm Gonna Get You" - Bizarre Inc. featuring Angie Brown
from the album Energique (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #47

This week's "robbed hit" comes from the British dance act Bizarre Inc., which started out as a duo of DJ's Dean Meredith and Mark Archer in the late 1980s, but after a couple of stiffed releases Archer left, to be replaced by Andrew Meecham and Carl Turner. In 1991, their breakthrough single "Playing With Knives" became one of the first big techno hits in the UK, reaching #4 on the British singles chart. The following year, their debut album Energique was released, with a house music jam as the new single. "I'm Gonna Get You", featuring British singer Angie Brown, would be the song that would get them noticed in America, becoming their biggest worldwide hit...

While "I'm Gonna Get You" spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard magazine's Dance Club Play chart, the song stalled under the top 40 at #47 in April of 1993. Internationally the single reached #3 in the UK as well as in the Netherlands, and also made the top 20 in Belgium (#14) and Ireland (#17).

The trio's next single, "Took My Love", also featured Brown, and spent two weeks atop Billboard's Dance Club Play list as well, but this time didn't make the pop Hot 100, though it climbed to #19 in the UK. That was followed by "Love In Motion", their final American charting single, which featured Yvonne Yanney on vocals. That single scaled to #4 on the Dance chart here in the U.S.

In 1996, Meredith, Meecham, and Turner released their next set, Surprise, and while two songs reached the British top-40, with "Surprise" peaking at #21, neither made either the American dance or pop chart. Bizarre Inc would split as an act shortly after, though Meredith and Meecham would continue to work together on other projects. In 1999, a re-release of "Playing With Knives" would re-enter the UK Chart at #30. Meanwhile, Brown was the voice behind Motiv-8's techno single "Rockin' For Myself", which went to #18 in 1994.

"I'm Gonna Get You" was based on a nipped verse from a single from club icon Jocelyn Brown, "Love's Gonna Get Ya", which went to #1 on the dance chart and #38 R&B in 1985 (that song also gave the "I've Got The Power" sample to Snap's "The Power"). As opposed to Snap!, Bizarre Inc had Angie recreate Jocelyn's singing...

Here's the extended "Original Flavour Remix" that topped Billboard's Dance Club Play chart for two weeks...

And here's the group appearing live (well, Angie's live vocals) on Top of the Pops...

In 2014, Angie auditioned for The Voice UK by singing "I'm Gonna Get You", but none of the mentors (including Kylie Minogue) turned around for her. Viewer fury ensued...

The following year, DJ/remixer Dave Aude and former Pussycat Doll Jessica Sutta reworked the song into a new jam with some new lyrics, and went to #1 on the American dance chart...

Even the Mickey Mouse Club took on the club jam with a very very young Britney Spears singing lead...

And lastly, Angie singing the track live...
