Songoftheday 12/2/17 - If I ever get down in the dumps short of a dollar nothin change for months, it seems to rain about every day and all the news seems kinda grey...
"Elevate My Mind" - Stereo MC's
from the album Supernatural (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #39 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1
Today's song of the day comes from the British electronica act Stereo MCs, which original started out with DJ Nick Hallum ("The Head") and singer Rob Birch ("Rob B") in the early 1980's in London. After a couple of indie singles from the duo, they recruited singer Cath Coffey and drummer Owen If to record their first album 33-45-78 in 1989. One track from the set, "On 33", popped on to the lower rungs of the UK singles chart at #94. With a foot in the door from touring with the Happy Mondays, and association with alternative hip-hop artists like the Michael Franti's Disposable Heroes of HipHopracy and the Jungle Brothers, the group released their sophomore effort Supernatural the following year. While the lead single "Elevate My Mind" was only a minor hit in the UK, peaking at #74, the mix of rap and rock groove scored them their first big hit in America...
"Elevate My Mind" reached the American pop top-40 in July of 1991. A second single from the album, "Lost In Music", missed the US pop chart, but did manage to top Billboard's Dance Club Play chart for one week, and did a little better in the UK, topping out at #46. They would return in 1992 with an even bigger single, "Connected".
