Songoftheday 4/8/20 - I been looking for you're ass since a quarter past, hot peas and butter baby come and get your supper...

"Keep On Keepin' On" - MC Lyte
from the albums Sunset Park (Original Soundtrack) and Bad As I Wanna B (both 1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's song of the day comes from female rapper MC Lyte, who scored her first top-40 pop hit as a lead artist in the fall of 1993 with "Ruffneck". Three years later, Lana Moorer returned with a song that originally appeared on the soundtrack to the high school movie Sunset Park starring Rhea Pearlman (yes, that Rhea Pearlman) as a basketball coach. "Keep On Keepin' On", written by MC Lyte with producer Jermaine Dupri using a generous sample of Michael Jackson's Bad album track "Liberian Girl", the song would end up becoming her biggest hit, leading to the release of her next album Bad As I Wanna B. "Keep On Keepin On" became MC Lyte's first and only top ten pop hit in June of 1996. The song spent a week at #3 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart (her biggest success there as well), while getting to #2 on their Rap Singles list. Internationally, the single went to #18 in New Zealand, and #27 in the UK. When the Bad As I Wanna B album came out in the summer, the set went to #59 in the US. As for the Sunset Park soundtrack, two more singles were released from the set - "Hoop N Yo Face" from the 69 Boyz featuring the Quad City DJ's slipped onto the pop chart at #95 while topping out at #62 R&B and #19 Rap, while "Are You Ready" from Aaliyah, her first showing since her debut album, was a radio hit the just missed the R&B Airplay top-40 at #42.
