Songoftheday 4/16/20 -And if the sun don't shine you brighten up my day, and if the rain should fall It never seems to fall my way...
"You" - Monifah
from the album Moods...Moments (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #32 (five weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7
Today's song of the day comes from soul singer Monifah, who grew up Monifa Carter in New York City. Signed to Heavy D/Puff Daddy's label Uptown under MCA Records, she released her debut single "I Miss You (Come Back Home)" in 1995. The song was originally recorded for the soundtrack to the TV show New York Undercover starring Malik Yoba. It climbed to #16 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart and made it to #56 on the pop Hot 100, and set the stage for her debut album Moods...Moments (which includes that song) in the spring of the following year. Monifah's next release would land her a top-40 pop hit for the first time. "You", written by Rheji Burrell, Vincent Herbert, Craig King, and Dwight Meyers (Heavy D), was a downtempo slinky little ride of a love song, like a more sexual Mary J. Blige...
"You" became Monifah's first top-40 pop hit in May of 1996. The song almost made the R&B top ten in Billboard, peaking at #11. A third radio single from the Moods...Moments album, "Nobody's Body", blipped on to the R&B Airplay chart for a few weeks, topping out at #71, followed by the fourth cut from the set (and third physical single) "You Don't Have To Love Me", which got to #36 R&B, #82 on the pop Hot 100, and actually took her overseas, becoming a top-40 hit in New Zealand at #38. While Moods...Moments climbed to #6 on Billboard's R&B albums chart, it just missed the top-40 on the all-genre tally at #42.
