Songoftheday 4/29/20 - I'm drunk and I swear this crescent, is just a curse I got here by killing off all my friends...

"Everything Falls Apart" - Dog's Eye View
from the album Happy Nowhere (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #66 (as B-side to "Small Wonders")
Billboard Hot 100 Airplay peak: #14 (one week)
Weeks in the Hot 100 Airplay Top-40: 20

Today's song of the day comes from the alternative rock group Dog's Eye View, who came together in the early 1990 under lead singer Peter Stuart. They released their debut album Happy Nowhere in the fall of 1995, with the track "Everything Falls Apart" promoted to radio. Written by Stuart, who produced the song with Dave Barton, it was a jangle-pop gem with emotional overtones not unlike the work of the Gin Blossoms and Counting Crows, the latter whose Adam Duritz discovered the band...

Because "Everything Falls Apart" wasn't initially released as a commercial single, it wasn't able to place on Billboard magazine's official pop Hot 100 chart at the height of its popularity. However, the song did climb to the top 20 on their Hot 100 Airplay radio tally in June of 1996, eventually spending eight months on the chart. The song was a hit on rock radio, making both the Mainstream (#18) and Alternative (#19) format lists (where that sales rule didn't apply). It also rose to #17 on their Adult Top-40 radio chart, lingering on for a half year (26 weeks). Internationally, the single went to #5 in Canada, and just missed the top-40 in New Zealand at #41.

When it came time to release a follow-up single, the band included "Everything Falls Apart" as the "B-side" to the commercial single for "Small Wonders", thereby finally allowing Billboard to count its points towards the official Hot 100. However by that time that song was a faded recurrent, and "Small Wonders" got small attention, and the double-sided single only managed to get to #66 on the Hot 100. The Happy Nowhere album peaked at #77, a quite modest result for holding a single release back to attempt to "juice" album sales. Do these record companies learn? Of course not. Sadly for the band, after a second album Daisy that stiffed, they were dropped and Stuart carried on solo. He did reassemble a version of Dog's Eye View for one more album in 2005, Tomorrow Always Comes.
