Songoftheday 4/3/20 - I know that you're somebody else's guy, but these feelings that I have for you I can't deny...

"You're The One" - SWV
from the album New Beginning (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 16

Today's song of the day comes from the female R&B vocal trio SWV (Sisters With Voices), who had followed up their successful debut album containing three top ten pop hits/four top ten R&B hits with a top-20 pop/top-10 R&B song from the soundtrack to the movie Above The Rim, "Anything", in the spring of 1994. Two years later, Coko, Taj, and Lelee returned with the first single from their sophomore effort New Beginning. "You're The One", written by Coko and Taj along with producer Allen Gordon and songwriters Andrea Martin and Ivan Matias, was a bouncy neo-new jack lust song towards an already attached man that allowed their vocals to shine, even though their intentions were quite bad, not even asking the guy to leave his girl...

"You're The One" became SWV's fourth (and last) top ten pop hit in June of 1996. The song scored the trio their third #1 R&B single, where it stayed for a week. Internationally, the single peaked at #6 in New Zealand, and made it to #13 in the UK. In Canada, it stopped at #53.

Like many R&B hits of the time, "You're The One" was remixed into a completely different production for the urban market. Here's the "'96 Allstar Anthem Mix", which interpolates the chorus melody for Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat"...

And the trio performing "You're The One" live at Showtime At The Apollo...

Finally, the reunited group in concert in 2014...
