"Heartbeat" was a club hit for R&B singer and Newark, NJ native Taana Gardner. Originally issued as a one-off single that later would be included in the re-issue of her sole album Taana Gardner, the song was written by Kenton Nix, who produced the track with Henry Batts. On Billboard's Disco Top 100 chart, "Heartbeat" climbed to #6 in 1981, staying on the list for an impressive 21 weeks. The song later would be covered by the dance-pop group Seduction featuring RuPaul's best friend Michelle Visage, and reach the top-40 in 1990.
