"Theme From Mission: Impossible" - Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen
from the album Mission: Impossible (Original Soundtrack) (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's song of the day comes from the soundtrack to the film re-imagining of the television show Mission: Impossible starring Tom Cruise. For the credits, a remake of the original theme song done by composer Lalo Schifrin, which just missed the top-40 on the American pop chart in 1967, peaking at #41...

For the new version, producers commissioned two of the members of the rock band U2, who had just scored a soundtrack hit of their own with "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" from Batman Forever.  Credited to bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen, and produced by Mullen with David Beal, the single did remarkably well, even outperforming U2 tracks for the past couple of years...

Clayton and Mullen's take on "Mission: Impossible" spent a month in the top ten on the American pop chart in June of 1996. The song also made it to #23 on Billboard magazine's Adult Top-40 radio chart, while the remixes of the song helped it spend a week at #2 on the Dance Club Play chart. Internationally, the single topped the charts in Iceland, Finland, and Hungary, and reached the top ten in Australia (#2), Ireland (#2), Austria (#4), Norway (#4), Sweden (#5), Germany (#6),  the UK (#7), New Zealand (#7), Denmark (#7), Switzerland (#9), and Canada (#10). The soundtrack itself, which also included cuts from Bjork, Massive Attack, and the Cranberries, went to #16 on the Top 200 Albums sales chart in the States.
