"5 O'Clock" - Nonchalant
from the album Until The Day (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #24 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song of the day comes from female rapper Tanya Pointer, who records under the moniker Nonchalant, who grew up in Washington, DC. Signed to MCA Records, she released her debut single "5 O'Clock" at the start of 1996. With a busload of writers including Raguel Dill, Kapin Ferguson, Andre Harrison, Lonnie Simmons Jr, Dewayne Staten and Pointer herself, the single became her first and bigger success...

"5 O'Clock" became Nonchalant's first and only top-40 pop hit in April of 1996. The song also climbed to #8 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, while spending three weeks at #1 on their Rap Singles chart. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in Germany at #30, while just missing that mark in the UK at #44. The second single from the record, "Until The Day", missed the pop Hot 100, but nicked the R&B chart at #88 and the Rap Singles list at #25. Her first and only studio album, Until The Day, got into the top half of the Top 200 Albums sales chart at #94.

Nonchalant returned in 1998 with the single "Take It There" featuring Rampage, but with it only rising to #56 at R&B, she was dropped by MCA. Her last chart appearance to date was in 2001, when she guested on Big Lew's single "How We Do", which peaked at #80 R&B. Last I could find, she DJ's and was a butcher at a DC supermarket.

Up tomorrow: Folk hero returns demanding some proof.
