Songoftheday 4/17/20 - How many special people change? How many lives are living strange?
"Champagne Supernova" - Oasis
from the album (What's The Story) Morning Glory? (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: Ineligible to chart
Billboard Hot 100 Airplay peak: #20 (one week)
Weeks in the Hot 100 Airplay Top-40: 19
Today's song of the day comes from the quintessential Manchester rock band Oasis, who had landed a top ten pop hit in America and their biggest success with the song "Wonderwall" from their second album (What's The Story) Morning Glory? in the spring of 1996. The next song from the set promoted to radio in America was the epic album closer "Champagne Supernova". Written by band leader/guitarist Noel Gallagher, who produced the track with Owen Morris, and sung by brother Liam, the seven minute stream of consciousness was a favorite at rock radio during the height of "Britpop" crossover...
Since "Champagne Supernova" wasn't released as a proper single in the States, it was unable to place on Billboard magazine's official pop Hot 100 chart. However it spent a hefty 19 weeks on the airplay component of the list, rising as high as #20 in May of 1996. The song spent five weeks at #1 on the Alternative Rock radio chart, and climbed to #8 on the Mainstream Rock tally. The song even crossed over to the Adult Top-40 format chart at #33. Internationally, the single made the top-40 in Canada (#11), New Zealand (#16), and Australia (#26), but was actually not put out in their native Britain (most likely like here to boost the sales of the album). One more release from the Morning Glory set, the reflective "Don't Look Back In Anger", went to #10 on the Alternative Rock chart and #55 on the Hot 100 Airplay list in American, while in Britain and Ireland it went all the way to #1.
