Songoftheday 3/25/21 - Stepped in the club after my show, you know the spot where everybody's on the low...

"Let's Ride" - Montell Jordan featuring Master P and Silkk The Shocker
from the album Let's Ride (1998)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 17

Today's song of the day comes from R&B singer Montell Jordan, whose 1996 sophomore effort ...More had spun off three top-40 pop hits in America with "I Like", "Falling", and "What's On Tonight".  Two years later, Jordan returned with his third album, with the title track "Let's Ride" released as the first single. Written by Jordan along with producer Teddy Bishhop, the record features New Orleans rappers Master P and brother Silkk The Shocker (with writing credits for each), both of whom had hit the mainstream with Percy's single "Make Em Say Uhhh!". He puts on his best R. Kelly impression, with the lascivious lyrics, beat-shifting, and rhythmic vocal delivery that got the ladies on notice as he sends out an open invitation. The thing is, it end up being the strip club jam that the music video is, and without his party production, the brothers' rap just feels like deflated braggadocio...

Despite that, "Let's Ride" became Jordan's second-biggest pop hit, reaching the runner-up spot on the American top-40 in April of 1998. The song became his second to top Billboard magazine's R&B chart, where it stayed for three weeks. Internationally, the single made the top-40 in New Zealand (#14) and the UK (#25). The Let's Ride album, released that March, crested at #20 on the Billboard 200 sales tally in the U.S., and #8 on the R&B-specific list.
