from the album Welcome To Our World (1997)

Billboard Hot 100 Airplay peak: #37 (one week)
Weeks in the Airplay Top-40: 6

Today's song of the day comes from Timbaland and Magoo, which featured the third big hip-hop producer to enter the rap field as an artist (along Puff Daddy and Jermaine Dupri), Tim "Timbaland" Mosley. The pair's debut single, "Up Jumps Da Boogie" (credited to Magoo and Timbaland), reached the top-20 on the pop chart in the early autumn of 1997. By the time of the album release and the next song served to radio, the names were switched. "Luv 2 Luv U", written by the duo along with Stephen Garrett of the rap group Playa, who are features on both versions of the cut on the Welcome To Our World album. It would be the "remix" version with Playa and singer Shaunta Montgomery that got the big bulk of the airplay, and even though it wasn't put out as a single, pop and urban radio got on board with it's bouncy funk and a smooth video delivering what Jermaine Dupri couldn't - a party record...

Since "Luv 2 Luv U" wasn't released as a commercial "single", it wasn't able to place on Billboard magazine's official Hot 100 pop chart. However, the track got enough radio love to spend a month and a half in the top-40 part of the airplay component of that tally in March of 1998. The song also rose to #5 on their R&B Airplay list as well.

The "original" version of the track, which had St. Nick instead of Shaunta Montgomery, had a totally different production that sampled Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby"...

Finally, it's Timbaland and Magoo with Shaunta performing in concert in New York in 1998..

Up tomorrow: The Material Girl is quite cold.
