Robbed hit of the week 3/15/21 - Meredith Brooks' "What Would Happen"...

"What Would Happen" - Meredith Brooks
from the album Blurring The Edges (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #46 (two weeks)

This week's "robbed hit" comes from singer/songwriter Meredith Brooks, who landed a massive pop hit in America on her first try, reaching the runner-up position in the summer of 1997 with the profane proclamation of "Bitch". The second release from the record, "I Need", was a top-40 hit in the UK at #28, but didn't get any attention here in the States. On her third try, Brooks put out "What Would Happen", the sole track from her record she wrote all by herself.  The song was a 180 from "Bitch", a much more smoldering and subdued track that dealt with the puzzles of human interaction and the uncertainty of a new love...

While "What Would Happen" spent twenty weeks on Billboard magazine's Adult Top-40 radio chart, peaking at #21, the single stopped a handful of notches below of the pop top-40 in February of 1998. Internationally, the song did pretty much the same in England, cresting at #49 on the singles chart there.
