Songoftheday 3/1/21 - It doesn't mean much it doesn't mean anything at all, the life I've left behind me is a cold room...
"Sweet Surrender" - Sarah McLachlan
from the album Surfacing (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #28 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 3
Today's song of the day comes from Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan, who had cracked the American pop top-40 for the first time in the autumn of 1997 with her Grammy-winning song "Building A Mystery". The second single released from her Surfacing album would be "Sweet Surrender". Written by McLachlan and produced by Pierre Marchand, the uptempo track has buzzing electric guitars over her gentle lyrics cry of being damaged and broken and unsure how love can save her from the pain she had in the past. It has echos of k.d. lang's "Constant Craving", but even more persistent...
"Sweet Surrender" became Sarah's second top-40 pop hit in America in February of 1998. The song climbed to #10 on Billboard magazine's Adult Top-40 radio chart, while slipping in at #27 on their Adult Contemporary format list. It also crossed over to rock radio, where the song peaked at #14 on the Alternative Rock chart (her most recent hit there), while getting to #2 on the Triple-A (Adult Album Alternative) list. The remixes of the track, including one by trance master Tiesto, helped "Sweet Surrender" rise to #6 on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart in 2001, three years after its release. Internationally, the single reached #2 in her native Canada.
