"Nuttin' But Love" - Heavy D & The Boyz
from the album Nuttin' But Love (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #40 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song of the day comes from the hip-hop group Heavy D & The Boyz, who returned to the top-40 in the spring of 1994 with the first single from their fifth album, "Got Me Waiting". Their follow-up was the title track "Nuttin' But Love" written by (the late) Heavy D with a prominent sample of the obscure song "Ecstasy" by the new wave band Endgames from 1983...

"Nuttin' But Love" entered the pop Top-40 in September of 1993, the last as a group. The song also climbed to #18 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine. Their third single from the set, "Black Coffee", got to #15 on the R&B list, but stalled down at #57 on the pop Hot 100. Finally the track "This Is My Night", which sampled Kool & The Gang's "Ladies Night", was an international success despite not being released in American, peaking at #14 in France, #17 in the Netherlands, #24 in Belgium, and #30 in the UK.

Up tomorrow: A soul ingenue mines the Isley Brothers for a superlative hit.
