"Thinkin' Problem" - David Ball
from the album Thinkin' Problem (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #40 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song of the day comes from neo-traditionalist country singer David Ball, who grew up in South Carolina with church music roots before embarking on a secular music career. In 1988 through 1989, after being signed to RCA Records, he released a trio of singles, none of them reaching the top-40 on the country airplay chart (the best was his debut, "Steppin' Out", which topped out at #46). With that, RCA left him before his album could be released (it would be put out later after his success). Five years later, Ball signed on with Warner Brothers, and recorded what would be his debut album for sale, Thinkin' Problem. The title track, written by Ball with Allen Shamblin and Stuart Ziff, starts out brash and clean with his voice cutting through with the chorus straight away before describing what put him in this state...

"Drinkin' Problem" climbed all the way to #2 on the country airplay chart in Billboard magazine, accumulating enough sales of the "cassingle" to bring it into the Hot 100 top-40 in July of 1994. His follow-up single, the downtempo ballad "When The Thought Of You Catches Up With Me", made it into the country airplay top ten at #7, but didn't have the sales push, so it only managed to "bubble under" the Hot 100 at #107. The third release, the swinging "Look What Followed Me Home", just missed the country top ten at #11, followed by the blues-rock of "What Do You Want From His Love", which peaked at #48. Finally, the swing of "Honky Tonk Healin" did respectably for a fifth single at #50.
