"Tootsee Roll" - 69 Boyz
from the album 199Quad (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #8 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 31

Today's song of the day comes from the 69 Boyz, a Miami-bass style rap group put together by producers CC Lemonhead and Jay Ski in Jacksonville Florida in the early 1990s. The pair had already had success with 95 South with their version of "Whoot! There It Is!" which peaked at #11 in 1993. In the spring of the following year, the group, featuring rappers with nicknames like "Fast", "Slow", "Thrill Da Playa", and "Rottweiler" (with one guy just Pat Hicks), released their debut single "Tootsee Roll", which alluded to a booty-shaking dance that apparently would happen in the strip clubs. It would become their first and biggest hit...

"Tootsee Roll" (intentionally misspelled to avoid a copyright infraction) became 69 Boyz first top-40 pop hit, reaching the top ten in January of 1995, over seven months after its release. The song also climbed to #9 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine, while it spent seven non-consecutive weeks at #1 on their Rap Singles list. A second single from their debut album 199Quad, "Kitty Kitty", made the R&B top-40 at #36, and peaked at #6 on the Rap Singles chart, but stalled down at #51 on the pop Hot 100 in America.

Here's the 69 Boyz performing live on TV, using the remix track, which somehow manages to sample the Art Of Noise...

And lastly in concert in 2017 (turn your speakers down)...

Up tomorrow: Philly boyz also want to get a bit nasty, but in a more gentlemanly way.
