Songoftheday 6/13/19 - I'm waiting for someone who could turn my life around, someone who could make me feel the way I used to feel...
"I'd Give Anything" - Gerald Levert
from the album Groove On (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #28 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song of the day from R&B singer Gerald Levert, who had been running two music careers, one as a member of the new jack swing-ish trio Levert, who had previously hit the top ten with "Casanova", and as a solo artist. In the spring of 1992, Gerald along with his dad Eddie landed a top-40 pop hit with the love ballad "Baby Hold On To Me", from his album Private Line. He then went back to his old group to release the record For Real Tho' the following year; from it the single "abc-123" just missed the pop Top-40 at #46. In 1994, Gerald put out his second solo effort Groove On. The lead single was a cover of a country hit for the band Boy Howdy. Their original of "She's Give Anything" would become their first top ten country hit in 1993 (though not their biggest), but it missed the pop Hot 100 altogether...
With a change of gender to make it first-person, Gerald's cover of the song was well-recieved by pop radio, who gave him a second chance...
Levert's version of "I'd Give Anything" became his second solo-billed hit in September of 1997. The song went to #4 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine as well. The second single from Groove On, "Can't Help Myself", went to #15 on the R&B chart, while popping on to the pop Hot 100 at #98. That was followed by "Answering Service", which peaked at #12 on the R&B chart while "bubbling under" the pop Hot 100 at #105. Finally, "How Many Times" was a minor R&B hit at #56.
Up tomorrow: Soul youngsters proclaim their truthfulness.
