Songoftheday 6/12/19 - Shake the butt now you know you going on, now look at me and shake that big butt...

"Funky Y-2-C" - The Puppies
from the album The Puppies (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #40 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 1

Today's song of the day comes from the brother and sister rap duo the Puppies, who recorded their self-titled debut album with their father producing independently in 1993. With the response to their debut single "Funky Y-2-C", Calvin Mills II ("Big Boy") and Tamara Dee Mills were bought out by Columbia, who went and re-released the track nationally to become the siblings' first and biggest success. It was novel to have the "miami bass" sound performed by kids, but the genre most known for appearing in strip clubs maybe wasn't the best of ideas longevity-wise...

"Funky Y-2-C" became the Puppies' first and only top-40 pop hit in August of 1994. The song also climbed to #31 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine, as well as hit #6 on their Rap Singles chart. After a follow-up single tanked, the pair were quickly let go from Columbia. A second album, Recognize, was put out independently in 1996, with lead single "Hokey Pokey" (yes, a Miami Bass version of that childhood dance song) only managing to get to #46 on the Rap Singles chart while missing the pop and R&B lists altogether.
