"Bop Gun (One Nation)" - Ice Cube featuring George Clinton
from the album Lethal Injection (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's song of the day comes from rapper and actor O'Shea Jackson, aka Ice Cube, who landed his four top-40 pop hit as a lead artist in the spring of 1994 with the second single from his Lethal Injection album, "You Know How We Do It". His follow-up to that song would be a track named after two cuts from bands fronted by funk master George Clinton, who appears on the record. "One Nation" is from "One Nation Under A Groove", which was recorded by Funkadelic in 1978 and serves as the main sample groove for this. "Bop Gun" was a track from Parliament from 1977, and the lyrical content provides the plotline for the music video, which has Clinton infiltrating a party populated by the likes of Bootsy Collins and rapper WC. And the song itself was trimmed from its original eleven-minute length to a radio-friendly edit...

"Bop Gun" became Ice Cube's fourth top-40 pop hit in October of 1994. The song also climbed to #37 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine, while peaking at #6 on their Rap Singles chart. Internationally, the single went to #22 in the UK.
