Songoftheday 6/4/19 - It's kind of easy when you listen to the G'd-up sound, pioneer speakers bumpin' as I smoke on a pound...

"This DJ" - Warren G
from the album Regulate...G Funk Era (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14

Today's song of the day comes from hip-hop artist Warren G (for "Griffin"), who used his talent and connections with stepbrother Dr. Dre to land a solo record deal as well as a massive pop/R&B hit in the summer of 1994 with "Regulate" from the soundtrack to the movie Above The Rim. The second single released from Warren's debut album Regulate...G Funk Era, which went to #2 on the albums sales chart, would be another smooth rap hybrid of "This DJ". With Warren's sung-rap style over a myriad of samples including a prominent interpolation of Atlantic Starr's "Curious", the single grabbed him yet another big hit...

"This DJ" became Warren G's second, and so far most recent, top ten pop hit in September of 1994. The song actually did better on the pop side, stopping short of the top ten at #14 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, while topping at #3 on the Rap Singles Chart. Internationally, the single peaked at #5 in New Zealand, and was a top-40 hit in the UK (#12), Sweden (#22), France (#25), and Germany (#37). At the 1995 Grammy Awards, "This DJ" was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance, which went to Queen Latifah for "U.N.I.T.Y.". The third release from the Regulate album, "Do You See", stopped short of the top-40 on both the American pop (#42) and R&B (#45) charts, but did so in the UK at #29.
