Songoftheday 6/14/19 - Sitting in my window thinking of you, all the fun things we use to do...
"Never Lie" - Immature
from the album Playtyme Is Over (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 21
Today's song of the day comes from the R&B vocal group Immature, who came together in Los Angeles in the early 1990s. Named for their young age - lead singer Marquee Houston and members Jerome Jones and Don Santos were only about nine years old, the group released their debut album On Our Worst Behavior in 1992 on Virgin Records. The lead single from the record, "Tear It Up (On Our Worst Behavior)", which reminded me of a young boy version of TLC, climbed to #29 on the R&B singles chart in Billboard magazine (helped by its inclusion in the animated movie Bebe's Kids), but the album tanked and they found themselves dropped by the label. After an appearance in the House Party 3 movie Santos also left, to be replaced by Kelton Kessee by the arrival of their next chance on MCA, their sophomore effort Playtyme Is Over. The first single from the set, "Never Lie", was written by producers Claudio Cueni and Chris Stokes, and the love ballad became their big breakthrough in the fall of 1994. It was far away from the new jack of their debut album, even more closer to Janet Jackson's "Again" and "Anytime Anyplace"-era work...
"Never Lie" became Immature's first and biggest pop hit in America, reaching the top five in October of 1994. The song also hit #5 on Billboard's R&B chart. Internationally, the single hit the top-40 in New Zealand at #34, and was a minor hit next door in Australia at #55.
