Songoftheday 6/22/20 - When G-dog, the hog come up in the place, there's dollar signs in your eyes and a smile in your face...
"What's Love Got To Do With It" - Warren G featuring Adina Howard
from the album Supercop (Original Soundtrack) (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #32 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 4
Today's song of the day comes from G-funk singer/rapper Warren G, whose debut album Regulate...G Funk Era had spun off two top ten pop hits in 1994 with "This DJ" and the Above The Rim soundtrack cut "Regulate". Two years later, Warren returned with a contribution to the Jackie Chan movie Supercop. An interpolation of the #1 hit from Tina Turner, "What's Love Got To Do With It", the record offered new verses rap-sung by Warren while keeping the chorus, provided by Adina Howard, who went all the way to #2 in 1995 on the pop and R&B chart with "Freak Like Me". With a high-budget video that included clips from the movie, the single got MTV and BET's attention...
Warren's "What's Love Got To Do With It" became his third top-40 pop hit, and Adina's second, in October of 1995. The song also climbed to #36 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, and #5 on the Rap Singles chart. The single did even better internationally, going to #1 in New Zealand, peaking at #2 in Australia (where it was one of the top ten singles of the year), the UK, and Sweden. It also made the top ten in Germany (#3), Austria (#5), Denmark (#5), Switzerland (#6), Ireland (#7), Norway (#7), France (#9), the Netherlands (#9), and Hungary (#9).
