"If It Makes You Happy" - Sheryl Crow
from the album Sheryl Crow (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 25

Today's song of the day comes from pop singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow, whose debut album Tuesday Night Music Club was a critical and popular favorite, nabbing her three Grammy awards out of five nominations in 1995 including Best New Artist and Record of the Year, as well as scoring three top-40 pop hits with "Can't Cry Anymore" and top tenners "Strong Enough" and "All I Wanna Do". Later that year Sheryl covered the Led Zeppelin song "D'yer Maker" for a tribute album, and hit #35 on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock radio chart.

Crow returned in 1996 with her self-titled sophomore effort, producing the set herself while playing a good amount of the music as well. The lead single from the set was the mid-tempo semi-aggro rock of "If It Makes You Happy". which she wrote with Jeff Trott. The song became another big hit for her, overcoming the slump most Grammy best new artists face...

"If It Makes You Happy" returned Sheryl to the American pop top ten for a week in January of 1997. The song made both the Mainstream (#6) and Alternative (#37) rock radio charts, while climbing to #5 on their Adult Top-40 airplay format tally. Internationally, the single topped the Canadian chart for a week, and made the top-40 in Belgium (#5F), the UK (#9), New Zealand (#12), Iceland (#17), Australia (#20), Sweden (#20), France (#29), and Switzerland (#39). The Sheryl Crow album, released in September of 1996, peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200 sales chart, going on to sell over three million copies. At the Grammy Awards in 1997, "If It Makes You Happy" won a trophy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, while the Sheryl Crow album took home the Best Rock Album award.
