Songoftheday 6/28/20 - I'm just a bachelor I'm looking for a partner, someone who knows how to ride...

"Pony" - Ginuwine
from the album Ginuwine...The Bachelor (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 21

Today's song of the day comes from R&B Elgin Lumpkin, who records under the moniker Ginuwine. Hailing from the Washington, DC area, Ginuwine first came under the wing of Devante Swing of Jodeci, and with the help of producer Timbaland, rapper Missy Elliott, and songwriter Stephen Garrett, he released his debut album Ginuwine...The Bachelor in the fall of 1996. The first single from the record was "Pony", written by Ginuwine with Timbaland and Garrett. With a midtempo beat that is still recognizable today, the future male stripper anthem became an instant success, and one of Timbaland's first big songs....

"Pony" became Ginuwine's first hit single, reaching the pop top ten in November of 1996. The song topped Billboard magazine's R&B chart for two weeks. Internationally, the single reached the top ten in Australia (#3), Belgium (#4F/#30W), New Zealand (#5), and the Netherlands (#8). It also made the top 40 in the UK (#16), Sweden (#16), Canada (#20), Germany (#22), Iceland (#28), and Switzerland (#29). The Ginuwine...The Bachelor album went to #26 on the Billboard 200 sales chart, going on to move over two million copies.

"Pony" was the only song from his debut to be released in America as a physical commercial single. The second song promoted to radio, "Tell Me You Wanna", got to #14 on Billboard's R&B Airplay chart, and got to #55 on the pop Hot 100 Airplay portion of that tally. It did even better overseas, reaching the top-40 in the UK (#16) and New Zealand (#21). That was followed by "I'll Do Anything/I'm Sorry", which got to #16 on the R&B Airplay list. Lastly, the song "Only When UR Lonely" got to #60 at R&B Airplay. Meanwhile internationally, Ginuwine's ballsy move of a cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry" did pretty well, reaching the top-40 in New Zealand (#7), the UK (#10), the Netherlands (#13), Germany (#15), Belgium (#16), and Switzerland (#24). (It did make the American "rhythmic" radio chart at #16.) Finally, "Holler", featuring Nicki and Virginia Slim), was a decent British hit at #13.
