Disco Dessert 6/12/20 - "Brazil" from The Ritchie Family...
"Brazil" was a club and radio hit for the female vocal trio the Ritchie Family (who were neither named Ritchie or a family). Appearing on their debut album Brazil, the song was a disco reimagining of an old swing-era hit that conductor Xavier Cugat took to #2 in 1943. Written by Brazilian composer Ary Barroso with English lyrics from Bob Russell, the track was produced by Jacques Morali, who would also go on to form the Village People. The three singers, Cheryl Jackson, Cassandra Wooten, and Gwen Oliver, mostly vamped on the mostly instrumental record. On Record World magazine's Disco File Top-20 chart, the single spent seven weeks at #1 in 1975, while almost making the pop top ten on Billboard's pop chart in America at #11.
