Songoftheday 6/7/20 - She's the finest thing I've ever seen, looking like a natural queen...
"Hit Me Off" - New Edition
from the album Home Again (1996)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song of the day comes from the R&B vocal group originally from Boston, Mass, New Edition, who had run a string of hit albums and singles in the 1980s before taking a break after their Heart Break album in 1988, which spun off the top ten hit "If It Isn't Love". During that break, members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe formed the hip-hop act Bell Biv Devoe, while Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill went the Bobby Brown route with solo albums. The thing was, every single one of them scored at least one top ten pop hit, way outperforming their success as a group. However, MCA Records was still owed an album, so the guys, including Bobby Brown this time, reunited for a sixth studio album, Home Again. The lead single "Hit Me Off" worked on the massive buzz around the comeback, and with its mid-90's friendly groove written by DeVoe along with Dinky Bingham and Jeff Dyson, brought them immediately back on the chart as fans scooped up the CD and cassette singles. Each of the six members gets a chance to shine in what would be their highest-charting pop single...
"Hit Me Off" became New Edition's third top ten pop hit in August of 1996. The song was a massive success on urban radio, topping Billboard magazine's R&B chart for three weeks, while the dance remixes of the track helped it slip on to their Dance Club Play list at #30. Internationally, the single went all the way to #2 in New Zealand, and made the top-40 in Australia (#16), the UK (#20), and the Netherlands #28. In Canada, it reached the halfway mark at #50.
