Songoftheday 4/13/19 - Say goodbye not knowing when the truth in my whole life began...

"I'll Remember" - Madonna
from the albums With Honors (Original Soundtrack) (1994) and Something To Remember (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (four weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 24

Today's song of the day is from Madonna, who had just come off of her controversial fifth studio album Erotica, which still managed to place four top-40 pop hits with "Rain", "Bad Girl", and two top ten efforts in "Deeper and Deeper" and title track "Erotica". But repercussions from her Sex book, a few public appearances gone wrong (especially on Letterman), and movie duds were threatening her momentum. Enter in the teen coming-of-age film With Honors, starring Joe Pesci, Brendan Fraser, and a very young Dr. McDreamy, Patrick Dempsey. It's the most least likely type of movie you'd expect a Madonna track on, but here we have it, with a straightforward ballad written by Mr. Mister's Richard Page with tweaks done by Madonna and co-producer Patrick Leonard. Her performance is subdued and earnest, and won a lot of her older fans back...

"I'll Remember" spent a month at the runner-up spot on the American pop chart in May to June of 1994. The song also took four weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio format chart, her best showing at the time. Internationally, the single topped the chart in Canada for five weeks, and also had a week on top in Italy, and reached the top ten in the UK (#7), Australia (#7), Sweden (#9), and Ireland (#10). The track made the top-40 in Switzerland (#17), Iceland (#20), the Netherlands (#28), Belgium (#32), New Zealand (#37), and France (#40).  "I'll Remember" was nominated for a Grammy Award for best song from a Motion Picture, which ended up going to Bruce Springsteen's "Streets Of Philadelphia".

I couldn't find any clips of Madonna doing this one live, so here's co-writer Richard Page...

Even though the "I'll Remember" single had remixes on it, the song never appeared on the Dance Club Play chart in Billboard, most likely because the versions aren't exactly for the dancefloor but for discerning ears, like this, "The Guerrilla Beach" Mix...
