Songoftheday 4/28/19 - Now the way of today with the homies is straight, gettin' fucked up off the dank chronic bud whatever you wanna call it...
"Sweet Potatoe Pie" - Domino
from the album Domino (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song of the day comes from rapper Domino, who had scored a top ten pop hit in the beginning of 1994 with "Getto Jam". Shawn Ivy's next single would possibly be taken as a joke on the bad spelling of Vice President Dan Quayle on the virtues of "Sweet Potatoe Pie". Written by Domino with producer DJ Battlecat over a subtle sample of Soul II Soul's "Back To Life", it would follow the debut up the charts as well...
"Sweet Potatoe Pie" became Domino's second and final top-40 pop hit in May of 1994. The song also climbed to #13 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine, while peaking at #3 on their Rap Singles Chart. None of the other tracks from his debut did well enough to chart.
The following year, Domino contributed the track "Tales From The Hood" to be the title song from the horror movie starring Corbin Bernson and David Alan Grier. The song was Domino's third top ten Rap Singles hit at #8, while stalling at #51 on the R&B chart and "bubbling under" the pop Hot 100 at #103. But by the time the rapper returned with his second album Physical Funk, interest had waned a bit, with the title track "Physical Funk" stopping at #46 on the R&B chart and #87 on the Hot 100, his last entry there, since followup "So Fly" only "bubbled under" at #112. While the album hit the R&B albums top-40 (#34), it lingered on the lower half of the all-genre sales list at #152. Dropped by Def Jam, he continued to release music independently, with single "Like That" featuring Diamonique nabbing his most recent R&B hit at #88, and #8 on the Rap Singles list. His most recent album, Get It Right, was put out in 2014.
Up tomorrow: The hardest-working man in the rap business is back for the curves.
