Songoftheday 3/4/19 - Saturday mornin' just gettin up with a hangover smellin' like I f*cked, I really can't remember cause I'm still kinda faded...
"Getto Jam" - Domino
from the album Domino (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13
Today's song of the day comes from rapper Domino, who grew up Shawn Ivy in St. Louis before moving out to Long Beach, California to start his music career. Releasing his self-titled debut album in 1993, he had his first and biggest hit right off the bat with his debut single "Getto Jam". The bouncy but thuggish track, which rode on a sample of Sly & The Family Stone's "Sing A Simple Song" and the piano break in George Benson's "This Masquerade", was written and produced by Domino with DJ Battlecat, who had also helmed work from Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, and the Game...
"Getto Jam" became Domino's first and biggest top-40 pop hit in America in February of 1994. The single also climbed to #4 on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine, but its biggest success was on the Rap Singles chart, spending six weeks at #1 there. Internationally, the song was a top-40 hit in the UK at #33 and in New Zealand at #25.
