Songoftheday 3/9/19 - All last summer in case you don't recall, I was your and you were mine forget it all...
"Found Out About You" - Gin Blossoms
from the album New Miserable Experience (1992)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #25 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 17
Today's song of the day comes from the alternative rock band Gin Blossoms, who after waiting over a year finally saw fruit from their major-label debut New Miserable Experience with the single "Hey Jealousy", which reached the pop top-40 in the fall of 1993. Following up on that success, the band re-released another cut from the set that originated on their indie release Dusted in 1989. "Found Out About You", a passionate though deceivingly jangly display of jealousy justified by a cheating lover's behavior, was written by the band's original guitarist, Doug Hopkins. By the time the re-release of the song, Hopkins, deep down in addiction and depression, was booted from the band at the pushing of the label, and saddest of all, died from suicide in December of 1993, as this song was climbing the charts...
"Found Out About You" became Gin Blossoms' second top-40 pop hit in February of 1994. The song was the band's biggest success on rock radio, spending a week at #1 on the Modern Rock format chart in Billboard magazine, while also peaking at #5 on their Mainstream Rock list. It also crossed over to the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart, only going as high as #31 but spending a half of a year (26 weeks) on the tally. Internationally, the single was big up north in Canada, peaking at #3, while slipping into the British top-40 at #40.
