Songoftheday 3/7/19 - She says, "Baby, I've been thinking 'bout a trailer by the sea. We could go to Mexico, you, the cat and me."...
"Jessie" - Joshua Kadison
from the album Painted Desert Serenade (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #26 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song of the day comes from Joshua Kadison, a pop singer/songwriter from L.A. who released his debut album Painted Desert Serenade in the spring of 1993. The lead single from the piano-based set was "Jessie", a story-song about receiving a call from an ex who wants back in, cat and all. But the singer knows she's bad news, but in the end is so taken in that he's convinced it's gonna work out (which the ending leaves open). The singer had dated actress Sarah Jessica Parker at one point, so there's obviously speculation about her being the titular ex in the song...
"Jessie" became Joshua's first top-40 pop hit in the U.S. in January of 1994. The song just missed the top ten on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio format chart in Billboard magazine, but ended up sticking around for an impressive 45 weeks. Internationally, the single reached the top ten in New Zealand (#5), Austria (#6), Denmark (#6), and the Netherlands (#10), while making the top-40 in Switzerland (#11), Germany (#12), Iceland (#13), the UK (where it peaked at #15 in 1995), Australia (#15), Ireland (#16), Sweden (#29), Belgium (#29), and Canada (#36 for four weeks).

Here's Joshua promoting the single in a TV appearance...
...and again live (with shorn hair) in Germany in 2008...
Up tomorrow: Boston blues-rockers are bewildering.
