Robbed Hit of the week 4/1/19 - Haddaway's "Life (Everybody Needs Somebody To Love)" ...
"Life (Everybody Needs Somebody To Love)" - Haddaway
from the album Haddaway (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #41
This week's "robbed hit" comes from Trinidadian-born dance music singer Haddaway, who had landed a hit in America with his iconic dance track "What Is Love" in the fall of 1993. By that time, that song had already been an international smash, and they already had moved on to the next single, "Life", which was getting as much love there as his debut. Written by the same production team of Dee Dee Halligan and Junior Torello, the lite-techno "Eurodance" vibe of the sound seemed just as radio-friendly as the first, and was released as the followup even while "What Is Love" was hanging on on American radio...
While "Life" climbed all the way to #5 on the American dance chart, just like how "What Is Love" missed the top ten by a notch, this song missed the top-40 at a frustrating #41 in February of 1994. Perhaps since "What Is Love" was such a huge radio presence that radio was unable to move on to something new (a curse for a lot of acts that turn into "one-hit wonders"). Nevertheless, internationally, the record was massive in Europe, going to #1 in Spain, Sweden, Greece, and Finland, and making the top ten in Germany (#2), Italy (#2), Switzerland (#2), Austria (#2), Denmark (#2), Ireland (#3), The Netherlands (#3), Norway (#3), Belgium (#3), Iceland (#4), France (#5), and the UK (#6), and even rose to #15 in Canada.
