"Dunkie Butt (Please Please Please)" - 12 Gauge
from the album 12 Gauge (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #28 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9
Today's song of the day comes from the rapper 12 Gauge, aka Isaiah Pickney, who hails from the city of Augusta in Georgia. He released his self-titled debut album in 1994, with the first single from the set, "Dunkie Butt (Please Please Please)" his first and biggest (ahem only) success, as one of the many southern "bass" rap records, a string of them quoting the "let me ride the donkey" line. But this one succeeded in making itself distinguishable by cribbing James Brown's "Please Please Please"...
"Dunkie Butt" became 12 Gauge's first and only pop and R&B hit in April of 1994. The song made the same rank, #28, on the R&B chart in Billboard magazine. It also peaked at #3 on the Rap Singles chart. The album scraped the bottom half of the sales chart at #141, and that would be the final appearance for 12 Gauge. He released two more albums since, but to no notice here.
Up tomorrow: Former gothic electronica act heads to the rainforest for another huge hit.
