Songoftheday 4/18/19 - Rainy night I'm all alone, sittin' here waiting for your voice on the phone...
"Love Sneakin' Up On You" - Bonnie Raitt
from the album Longing In Their Hearts (1994)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #19 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10
Today's song of the day comes from blues-rock artist Bonnie Raitt, who followed up her #1 Grammy-winning comeback album Nick Of Time with an album that granted the singer her first big mainstream pop success with Luck Of The Draw spinning off three top-40 pop hits with "Not The Only One", "I Can't Make You Love Me", and the biggest single of her career with the top ten "Something To Talk About". In 1994, Raitt returned with her third album produced by Don Was, Longing In Their Hearts. The lead single was a midtempo charmer much like "Something To Talk About" sonically. "Love Sneakin' Up On You", written by Tom Snow and Jimmy Scott, was well received especially by easy listening radio...
"Love Sneakin' Up On You" became Raitt's fourth top-40 pop hit in the U.S. in May of 1994. The song climbed to #25 on the Mainstream Rock radio chart in Billboard magazine, while spending five weeks at #2 on their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") format list. Internationally, the record topped the chart in Canada for three weeks, and was a minor hit in the UK (#69) and Germany (#71). At the Grammy Awards in 1995, the song was nominated for two awards - Record of the Year (which went to Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do") and Female Rock Vocal Performance, which Melissa Etheridge won for "Come To My Window".
The second release from Longing In Their Hearts, "You", was a delicate love ballad that was able to climb to #15 on the Adult Contemporary chart, but only popped on to the pop Hot 100 in America at #92. However in the UK it actually outperformed the first single, making the top-40 at #31, while in Canada it peaked at #16. Finally, another similar ballad, "Storm Warning", was offered as the third single, and got to #38 on the Adult Contemporary list and #36 on the main Canadian singles chart. The Longing In Their Hearts album won two Grammys as well, for Pop Vocal Album and Best Non-Classical Engineered Album. It was also nominated for Album of the Year, which Tony Bennett's MTV Unplugged won, and Female Pop Vocal Performance, which Sheryl Crow also took for "All I Wanna Do".
